For the 2022 model year, the ever-popular Porsche Macan is hosting a change in its lineup. Since the dawn of the Porsche 930, any model with the "Turbo" badge on the back was almost certainly the top-of-the-line trim option, or at least close to it. But for the 2022 Porsche Macan, the German brand is putting a figurative strike through the Macan Turbo and promoting the Macan GTS to top dog.

The GTS will officially be replacing the Turbo, and though it usually wouldn't be a featured story, Porsche's decision seems to be pointing to a larger structural change to its lineups in the future. But before we dive into that, let's remember what the 2022 Macan GTS is all about.

As for the powertrain, Porsche is giving the '22 Macan the 434-hp version of its twin-turbo V6 - the engine that was in the previous generation Turbo model. Of course, power goes to all four wheels and can carry the Macan to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and continue up to a claimed 169 mph top speed.

Why The Turbo Is Out, And Why The GTS Is In

Porsche isn't a company that's comfortable breaking its small, yet meaningful, traditions. So, the fact that a Macan Turbo won't be at the top of its model lineup is something to pay attention to. And like many new things happening in the automotive industry, we think it's because of electric cars.

If you haven't already heard, Porsche is coming out with a fully-electric Macan for the 2023 model year, and the timing seems a little too on-the-nose for this to be a coincidence. Porsche has made it clear that by the turn of the next decade, they expect 80% of its cars to be either party or fully electric. So, making your electric models shine is something companies have started doing to prepare for an EV future.

It's very likely that Porsche knew its GTS models weren't as commonly known as its Turbo models, and considering they are soon launching the 2023 Electric Macan, they wanted it to sit at the top of the Macan mountain without any confusion that it is the best and brightest new SUV they offer.

The Porsche 911's Possible Influence

Additionally, we have seen Porsche put the "Turbo S" badge on the Taycan as the model's top trim. This ousting of the gas-powered Macan Turbo could mean they will re-purpose that badge for the top-of-the-line electric Macan in the future.

As a final thought, the 911 may also have an influence on the replacement of the Macan Turbo. There will likely never be a time when the historic sports car isn't the brand's central flagship model. The point is that the Porsche 911 will likely always have a Turbo and Turbo S model. Additionally, if Porsche continues giving the "Turbo" badges to its other electric cars, future 911 Turbos could be the only gas-powered Turbo Porsches left, making the flagship car even more special.
