The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released their list of the safest cars for 2022. The big winner is Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. The Korean automaker has 11 Top Safety Pick+ and 10 Top Safety Pick awards. Volkswagen/Audi finished in second place with 8 Top Safety Pick+ and 3 Top Safety Pick awards. Volvo placed in third with 10 Top Safety Pick+ awards.

IIHS Awards Criteria Based on Crash Test Results And Headlight Effectiveness

All the 2022 award winners earn good ratings in six IIHS crash worthiness tests. All award recipients also have front crash prevention systems that earn a good or acceptable ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

Each vehicle designated as a Top Safety Pick has at least one trim level with headlights that earns a good or acceptable rating. The Top Safety Pick+ winners have good or acceptable headlights as standard equipment on all trims levels.

The IIHS will add two new criteria to their award requirements for the 2023 model year. The first is a side impact test performed at a higher speed and with a heavier movable barrier. There will also be a new nighttime pedestrian crash prevention test.
