Today, Volvo might be more associated with safety features than performance driving, but once upon a time, the Swedish manufacturer used to market its brick-like vehicles for their driving dynamics, as well. And in truth, though Volvo has suffered from terrible reliability concerns lately, a range of high-spec products within the lineup do keep that spirit alive (as do the Polestar hybrid and electric spin-offs). Still, seeing a Volvo wagon drifting is definitely a rare sight — luckily, Volvo's performance potential has been proven by a video posted to the YouTube channel Snooken Recordings, which shows a hardcore V40 that's received a twin-turbocharged BMW V8 under the hood doing some aggressive drifting at an event at the Gatebil Drift Series, Scandinavia's biggest car festival.

Turn Up The Sound

The build comes courtesy of Fast Mike Drifting and the car was started as a project based upon a 2018 V40. In a series of Facebook posts, owner Mike Andersson reveals all the work that went into converting the little car into a rear-wheel-drive drift car. The heart of the build comes in the form of a BMW M5's 5.0-liter V8, which has received a pair of Garrett turbos that pump out 15.9 pounds of boost, allowing for dyno-proven peaks of 856 horsepower and 813 lb-ft of torque.

Shredding Rubber All Over The Place

Hilariously, Andersson's V40 gets chased around the drift circuit by an E46 BMW — but the Volvo does more than its fair share of shredding the rear tires. That rear-wheel-drive conversion requires a front suspension setup from a Volvo 940, plus a BMW rear subframe and the differentials and axles from the donor M5. Sure, the project took a ton of time and effort, but watching the classic blue wagon with its fender flares, orange wheels, and matching graphics blast around is definitely some rip-roaring fun.
